Get Out of Your Yard! Our Visit to Brookgreen Gardens

I love to travel to new gardens and places.  So late summer seemed like the perfect time for a trip to South Carolina to see Brookgreen Gardens.

For the uninitiated, Brookgreen Gardens is simply a must see in the south.  It's about a half hour drive from Myrtle Beach.  It has a little something for everyone: from plants (duh) to a variety of native animals, beautiful grounds, and some of the most fascinating sculpture you may ever see in America.  And when you have over 2,000 sculptures, this is easily accomplished.

The original owners of the land, Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, were philanthropists and artists (a writer and sculptor).  They founded Brookgreen Gardens in 1931 to allow everyone to enjoy the beautiful land and art.

The garden itself has several sections in addition to the garden grounds themselves.  This includes two zoos.

One with farm animals:

Another with native species:

Then, of course, the gardens themselves are beautiful.  This time of year they were bold and bright with color.  Each bed was expertly designed.

There were also a tremendous amount of outdoor statues.

It was really a wonderful visit.  Hubs had never been to Brookgreen before and I had been quite some time ago.  We decided to go on a day that they hosted an event.  The grounds are enormous.  The aviaries were probably my favorite part.  Seeing all the unique birds up close was fascinating.  As far as indoor activities go they had several museum areas.  We only toured one of them but we saw a variety of sculptures.  I have never seen anything like it other than when I went to Europe and saw some of the art in the old cathedrals.  We toured almost everything they had and spent the entire day there.  It's the kind of place that one could easily spend two days at and not see the same thing twice - and had we had more time and better weather we probably would have done that.

For me, going to see new gardens is inspiring. It's neat to see new things that you would never see otherwise and sometimes see old things utilized in creative ways.  And we are definitely considering going back to see it decorated for Christmas.

Where do you like to go?  What inspires you?

Take care,

Rebecca
